Confess by Rob Halford - 5/5 Stars
An excellent autobiography of the personal and public aspects of the life of the Metal God Rob Halford's life. Born in the U.K., he chronicles his early years, his emerging interests (including his homosexuality), to his years with Judas Priest, Fight, Halford, and back to Judas Priest again (as an out individual in the metal scene).
Black Metal Rainbows edited by Daniel Lukes & Stanimir Panayotov - 5/5 Stars
This is a newly published book that examines sexuality, feminism, and race combining with, colliding into, but also being essential to, the fabric of one of the most despised (and loved) genres of music. Often a misunderstood genre, racists and misogynists have taken advantage of the extreme genre to push fascism in the name of nihilism. With every closed-minded band, there are several that recognize that Black Metal is against fundamentalist hate, and should welcome marginalized groups by default. The book is largely a series of essays and graphic art, which brings to fore many diverse opinions.
Leather, Spikes, and Chains: The Influence of Gay Culture in Punk, Hard Rock, and Heavy Metal Music by Javier S. Medina - 3.5/5 Stars
The subject matter of this book is great. There is a lot of information about cultural influences between different cultural groups in history and how they influenced, or were influenced by LGBT organizations or individuals. There is a personal side to the book, too. The downsides are lackluster editing and an abundance of conjecture in places. Otherwise, it's an interesting read.
